Christmas Eve is coming soon and it is time to think about what to ask Santa Claus. To collect all possible bonuses from this enterprise we believe it is productive to appeal to all Santa Clauses, all nations and countries at once ;-)

Letter text cab be typed even by a five years kid. But what to do with envelopes? How to print, say several handers of them? When the only difference is recipient's address? In OS/2 there are enough tools for this antiviral on the first glance operation, this time we will use popular OS/2 word processor Lotus WordPro.

What we have got to do?

• First of all we should prepare a file with all the addresses we need to send to,
• Then we should define a template for an envelope,
• Next step, we must "Merge" template and addresses we have prepared before.
• Finally we have got a pile of filled envelopes ready to be printed out.

This is a standard feature in Lotus WordPro and it is called Merge an envelope.

You may read a help for this feature yourself. To do so select sequentially Help -> Ask the expert; Next find a word "merge", then select in a help window "Merge an envelope". Besides envelope it is possible to define merge operation for letters and labels.

Let's look a simple example with plain addresses.

• Call wizard Mail merge assistant via Text -> Merge -> Envelope (Pic. 3). First step - choice of a data source file or new file creation.

  To create a new source data file, simply define fields names and a delimiter (Pic. 4). New Lotus WordPro file will be created automatically, which is immediately is available for data input.

  In our case everything was easier - addresses I got in a digital camera media (Topic, discussing how to attach an USB MSD device in OS/2). Oh, God ! What media I just haven't seen recently ;-).

  Source data file format: Name, ZIP code and address. Delimiter is - #

  Moscow's Santa Claus #12345#Kremlin, building 1
  Dutch Clauses #31415#Harlem, small house opposite Mensys
  

  After we have source data file structure defined, you will return to the main wizard's menu.

• Second step - create an envelope template (Press a Setup Envelope button in wizard's menu).

  Here you are required to select an envelope layout, "to put fields " around envelope's surface and add static text and pictures which will be repeated on each envelope.

  Note for Russian users. Because Russian post envelopes are not standard we recommend have an option "Include return address" switched on, and process fields across surface yourself into three frames - From, To, ZIP code (before new pile on envelopes is printed you can adjust frames more precisely).

  Pic 6. Template is ready. Field ADDRESS1 on each new envelope will be replaced with next new address.

• Final step - preview and print (Merge button on Pic.3).

Attention, all envelopes from shelf could be slightly different is superscription, though it makes sense to buy for those purposes white clear envelopes with additional inscriptions and pictures. (And don't forget to glue up stamps!!!).
