Чем отличаются системные ядра OS/2?

IBM W4 и IBM UNI

• mutexes are different (Scott refused to update them to the level of UNI/SMP)
• memory lock is different
• mapping of physical memory is different
• KEE is different, (because the DevHelpers? in W4 are different)

UNI kernel (just like SMP kernel) comes with a new DOSCALL1.DLL that contains additional API calls for multi-processor/multi-core systems. For example these allow to force a thread to run on a certain processor core etc. Not really helpful/meaningful for 1 processor/core but applications written for multi-core systems and using that API will need it otherwise they won't execute.

Initially UNI kernel needed a PSD in order to operate and W4 kernel did not. However that is not true any longer: you can operate ANY kernel (W4 / UNI / SMP) without a PSD but in that case you will only be able to use 1 processor(core) no matter how many you have. On the other hand, a PSD can offer more than just multi-core support, for example it can offer APIC support (high interrupts) ...

Conversively, in the meantime, even W4 kernel can load a PSD.
